The Federal Capital Territory Internal Revenue Service (FCT-IRS) has initiated a strategic partnership with the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) to boost tax compliance and enhance revenue generation within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

During a visit to the NFIU headquarters in Abuja, the acting Executive Chairman of FCT-IRS, Mr. Michael Ango, met with the NFIU Chief Executive Officer, Hajiya Hafsat Abubakar, to discuss how both organizations can collaborate more effectively. Ango emphasized the significance of NFIU as a key stakeholder in the tax administration process and highlighted the need to reinforce the existing partnership to achieve mutual benefits for both agencies.

“The purpose of this engagement is to solicit support and deepen our cooperation with strategic partners like NFIU,” Ango stated. “Our goal is to optimize revenue collection and enhance tax administration across the FCT.”

Recognizing the importance of information sharing and collaboration, Ango noted that combining data and insights between FCT-IRS and NFIU would significantly improve operational efficiency. He expressed confidence that the strengthened partnership would lead to better outcomes in tax compliance and revenue mobilization.

In response, NFIU CEO Hajiya Hafsat Abubakar commended Ango’s leadership and expressed her belief in his ability to elevate FCT-IRS to new heights. She affirmed NFIU’s commitment to leveraging Ango’s expertise in law and taxation to further improve the agency’s operational effectiveness.

Abubakar also highlighted the importance of addressing tax crimes, particularly tax evasion, which she described as a major obstacle to national development. “Tax evasion robs the government of crucial resources needed for infrastructure and other development initiatives,” she remarked.

Praising the FCT-IRS as one of NFIU’s most valuable partners in combating tax-related financial crimes, Abubakar revealed that the collaboration with FCT-IRS has become a model for partnerships with other state revenue agencies. “We have extended this model to about 24 other state revenue services, and our combined efforts are making a significant impact on domestic revenue mobilization across the country,” she added.

The enhanced collaboration between FCT-IRS and NFIU is expected to pave the way for more efficient tax collection and stronger compliance, ultimately contributing to the FCT’s economic development.
