In response to the escalating threat of cybercrime, a gathering of cybersecurity specialists and industry leaders converged at the FITC 2023 Cybersecurity Conference. Their primary objective: to promote the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology as a pivotal defense against cyber threats in the digital realm.

The Cybersecurity Manager at Ernst and Young Global Limited, Kelly Orjiude, used the event, held in Lagos on Wednesday, to highlight Nigeria’s vulnerability in the face of cyberattacks. He cited a staggering 12.9 million cyberattacks recorded during the previous presidential election.

Orjiude, advocating for AI-driven technologies, explained that these advanced systems are capable of real-time analysis of vast data sets. This enables the detection of intricate cyber threats while automating incident responses to swiftly mitigate potential damages.

However, he also sounded a note of caution regarding the responsible use of AI technology. While it significantly bolsters cybersecurity defenses, there remains a risk of malicious misuse, exemplified by instances of AI-driven fraud and misinformation.

He emphasized the importance of ethical and responsible AI practices, ensuring that this powerful technology is harnessed for the greater good. Orjiude stated, “In our pursuit of technological advancement, ethical considerations must guide us. AI is a powerful tool; how we use it determines its impact on society. Responsible AI integration is not just a choice; it’s our moral obligation.”

The Managing Director of Nigeria Interbank Settlement Systems, Premier Oiwoh, underlined the importance of strengthening Africa’s economic growth amid mounting cybersecurity challenges. Oiwoh emphasized the interconnection of digital transactions and critical infrastructure, stressing the need for capacity building, public-private partnerships, and international cooperation.

According to Oiwoh, these collaborative efforts are crucial in developing homegrown solutions tailored to Africa’s unique needs, thereby enhancing the region’s ability to respond effectively to cybersecurity threats.

The Founder of the Holistic Information Security Practitioner Institute, Taiye Lambo, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the transformative potential of AI in reshaping Nigeria’s global image.

Chizor Malize, the Chief Executive Officer of FITC, drew attention to the vulnerability of Africa to cyber threats. She cited factors such as the lack of robust cybersecurity infrastructure, inadequate awareness and education, and the rapid pace of digital adoption without commensurate security measures as contributing to this vulnerability.

As the threat landscape evolves, the call to harness AI for enhancing cybersecurity becomes increasingly urgent, with ethical considerations and responsible use as guiding principles.
