The Managing Director/CEO of eTranzact International Plc, Niyi Toluwalope, and the General Manager of the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), Dr. Babatunde Ajayi, have jointly underscored the importance of education, community engagement, and sustainability initiatives in safeguarding Lagos’ environment and coastal economy.
Their remarks were delivered during the 2025 Inter-Tertiary Institutions Environmental Summit, hosted by LASEPA and proudly sponsored by eTranzact. The summit served as a platform to promote Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles among Nigeria’s future leaders.
According to the Corporate Governance Institute, ESG refers to a framework that evaluates an organisation’s impact on the environment and society, along with its internal governance structures. It has become a key tool for assessing a company’s long-term sustainability and ethical footprint.
Representing the eTranzact CEO at the event, Adedayo Adejokun reiterated the company’s commitment to advancing financial inclusion and environmental responsibility.
“It is a privilege to represent eTranzact, the headline sponsor of this year’s LASEPA Inter-Tertiary Institution Essay and Debate Competition,” Adejokun said. “This summit goes beyond academic rivalry—it is a platform where bold ideas meet real-world environmental challenges. The theme, ‘Balancing Environmental Challenges and Its Impact on the Lagos Economy’, is both timely and critical. Environmental pressures are transforming the way our economies function, how businesses adapt, and how communities endure.”
He added that eTranzact’s commitment to innovation extends beyond technology, embedding sustainability and inclusiveness at the core of its operations and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, especially in education.
Dr. Ajayi, LASEPA’s General Manager, expressed optimism about the growing involvement of youths in environmental discourse. He emphasized that engaging students early on would deepen awareness and cultivate a generation that is better equipped to protect the environment.
The summit featured a highly competitive debate among students from Lagos tertiary institutions on the topic: “Plastic Pollution and the Challenges of Just Transition in a Developing Economy: Lagos as a Case Study.”
At the end of the debate:
-
Lagos State University (LASU) claimed first place,
-
Lagos State University of Science and Technology secured second,
-
University of Lagos (UNILAG) came third,
-
Lagos State University of Education placed fourth, and
-
St. Augustine’s College of Education rounded out the top five.
In parallel, the essay competition focused on the theme: “Sustainable Development in Lagos Coastal Region and Balancing Blue Economy Expansion with Environmental Potential,” reinforcing the need to align economic growth with environmental preservation.
The event marked another milestone in the collaborative push between the private and public sectors to empower young Nigerians and promote ESG values that will shape a more sustainable and inclusive future.
