The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has embarked on a collaborative effort to strengthen data privacy and protection by engaging in bilateral cooperation with the Office of the Information Commissioner (OIC) in the United Kingdom.
During a Study Visit to the OIC’s offices in London and Wilmslow, UK, a delegation from the NDPC, led by Dr. Vincent Olatunji, the National Commissioner, gained valuable insights into the operations of a fully-fledged data protection authority.
Dr. Olatunji took the opportunity to share Nigeria’s experiences and innovative approaches to implementing the Nigeria Data Protection Act of 2023.
According to a statement by Itunu Dosekun, Head of the Media Unit at NDPC, the OIC Deputy Commissioner for Regulatory Supervision, Stephen Bonner, warmly received the NDPC team during their visit.
Throughout the Study Visit held on September 28th-29th, 2023, both authorities delved into various aspects of data protection regulation, with a particular focus on policies and statutory guidelines, data protection impact assessments, children’s privacy data, data controller registration and fees, enforcement, investigations, and penalties.
It has been reported that further bilateral consultations are planned to facilitate the development of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at enhancing knowledge exchange and fostering stronger data privacy cooperation between the two Data Protection Authorities.
Mr. Solomon Odole, the ID4D Project Coordinator, who played an active role in the meetings as part of the ID4D’s support for the establishment of the Commission, reiterated the significance of building robust connections with data protection authorities in other nations to promote secure data flows and privacy practices.
