Citibank Nigeria Limited has announced the appointment of Nneka Enwereji as its new Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, effective August 19, 2024, following the approval from the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Enwereji takes over from Ireti Samuel-Ogbu, who retired after a distinguished 36-year career with Citi.

In a statement released by Lola Oyeka, Head of Public Affairs for Nigeria and Ghana at Citi’s Global Communications Enterprise Services and Public Affairs, Enwereji’s leadership qualities and deep industry expertise were highlighted as pivotal for the bank’s continued success.

Dr. Shamsuddeen Usman, Chairman of Citibank Nigeria Limited, expressed his enthusiasm for Enwereji’s appointment, stating, “I am very pleased with Nneka’s appointment. Her extensive knowledge of the industry, strong leadership skills, and strategic vision will ensure that Citibank Nigeria continues to guide our clients through an increasingly complex and dynamic environment. Having worked closely with her as an Executive Director, I am excited to collaborate with her in her new role as MD/CEO.”

Akin Dawodu, Sub-Saharan Africa Sub-Cluster Head for Citi, also shared his confidence in Enwereji’s capabilities, noting, “Nneka is a proven leader with a strong track record in growing businesses, deepening client relationships, and fostering robust partnerships. I am confident that she will continue to deliver exceptional value to our clients and stakeholders.”

Enwereji, in her remarks, expressed her excitement about leading Citibank Nigeria, saying, “I am thrilled to embark on this new chapter as the CEO of Citibank Nigeria Limited. I look forward to working with our dedicated team to leverage Citi’s global network and deliver unparalleled value to our clients and stakeholders.”

Prior to her appointment as CEO, Enwereji served as Citi’s Head of Global Network Banking for the Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) sub-cluster, where she led her team to achieve record business growth despite significant market challenges. Her extensive 31-year career with Citi includes roles such as GNB Co-Head for the Middle East and Africa, Africa Trade Services Head, and Financial Institutions SSA Trade Head.

Enwereji’s impressive academic background includes a first-class honors degree in Computer Science and Economics from Obafemi Awolowo University and an MBA from Warwick Business School, UK. She has also completed executive programs at Yale School of Management and the University of California, Berkeley.

With Enwereji’s appointment, the number of female bank CEOs in Nigeria continues to grow, marking a significant step forward in gender representation within the country’s banking industry.
