Airtel Nigeria has announced a significant increase in its network investments, doubling funding commitments to accelerate critical projects aimed at reshaping the country’s digital landscape and fostering inclusive connectivity.
The expanded investment drive will cover nationwide network expansion, spectrum capacity upgrades, fibre backbone enhancement, and strategic satellite partnerships with Starlink and OneWeb. These initiatives are expected to extend reliable connectivity to underserved and remote areas, supporting Nigeria’s digital inclusion agenda.
Speaking on NTA International and NTA News24’s Economy Watch programme, Airtel Nigeria’s Chief Technology Officer, Harmanpreet Dhillon, noted that the strategy goes beyond infrastructure build-out, focusing on unlocking opportunities for millions of Nigerians.
“Our priority is nationwide coverage, complemented by robust capacity augmentation through 2G and 4G enhancements, alongside upgrades to 5G,” Dhillon said. “We are also strengthening our fibre backbone and leveraging satellite solutions to ensure dependable connectivity reaches even the most remote communities.”
As part of its infrastructure expansion, Airtel is developing a second subsea cable landing station in Port Harcourt and a new world-class data centre to support cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and next-generation digital services. These projects are expected to deliver faster speeds, lower latency, and enhanced resilience for businesses and consumers.
By extending reliable connectivity to rural and underserved communities, Airtel aims to open access to healthcare, education, financial services, and other essential sectors, bridging the urban-rural digital divide.
Dhillon emphasized that the company’s doubled investments align with Nigeria’s national digital economy priorities, enabling fintech growth, smart city initiatives, and innovation across industries.
“With digital demand growing at an unprecedented pace, Airtel is doubling down not just on infrastructure but on empowering millions of Nigerians with inclusive digital access,” he said.
For Airtel, each investment represents more than infrastructure—it is a step toward transforming connectivity into opportunities, driving economic growth, and powering Nigeria’s digital future.
