The Executive Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Prof. Umar Danbatta, announced that Nigeria has achieved half a million Fifth Generation (5G) network subscriptions, and the country’s broadband penetration rate has reached 47.01% as of July 2023.

Prof. Danbatta made this statement while addressing an audience in Kano, highlighting the significant milestones the telecoms industry has achieved since 2015.

In July, Prof. Danbatta had reported over 60,000 5G subscriptions in Nigeria, emphasizing the nation’s goal to attain 50% broadband penetration by the end of 2023 and 70% by the end of 2025.

He further stated, “The telecommunications sector’s contribution to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has grown from 8% in 2015 to 16% in the second quarter of 2023, reflecting its increasing importance in the Nigerian economy.”

Moreover, Prof. Danbatta revealed that the influx of telecommunications companies into Nigeria’s telecoms sector had led to a substantial rise in investments. Investments have surged from $38 billion in 2015 to the current $75 billion, with continuous growth. Additionally, the sale of 5G C-Band Spectrum generated over $847.8 million for the Federal Government, bolstering its revenue.

Earlier, the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, emphasized Nigeria’s efforts to form partnerships aimed at enhancing telecommunication connectivity in underserved and unserved communities. Minister Tijani stressed the importance of connectivity as a catalyst for progress and noted that bridging the digital divide required strategic collaborations.
