The Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Peya Mushelenga, has officially extended the deadline for SIM card registration to March 31. Initially set for December 31, the extension comes as a relief for users who faced the risk of having their SIM cards deactivated if not registered in time.
As of December 27, mobile operators reported that 62.5% of active SIM card users had completed the registration process. This accounts for 1,491,349 out of 2,383,920 active subscribers who have registered since the commencement of the registration exercise in June 2022.
In his statement, Minister Mushelenga emphasized the importance of compliance with the registration process. He highlighted that the extension was granted after consulting relevant stakeholders and exercising the powers vested in his office.
“I hereby extend the period for the submission of information of existing customers from 1 January 2024 to 31 March 2024 in respect of all service providers,” Mushelenga stated.
He urged all subscribers to take advantage of this grace period, emphasizing that the registration of SIM cards is not an indefinite process. Failure to register cards by the extended deadline will result in suspensions, leading to unintended consequences for users. Minister Mushelenga concluded by encouraging all subscribers who have not yet registered to promptly utilize the grace period provided.
