MTN Rwanda has confirmed it has concluded its operator licence renewal process with the Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority (RURA).
The telecom operator’s previous licence expired on June 30 this year and the new concession is valid for ten years.
MTN forked out Rwf64 billion ($64.5 million) which is 70 percent of the total amount of Rwf91 billion ($92 million) and the company says the remaining 30 percent will be settled by July 2022.
According to the firm, the licence fee along with MTN Rwanda’s ongoing operational and investment requirements were funded by cash generated from operations and supplementary funding from local banks.
Charles Gahungu, General Manager ICT Regulation Department at RURA said the licence renewal process includes technical evaluation to assess a telecom firm’s plan, business plan which informs an analysis of the license fee to be paid, The New Times reported.
Nigeria Licence
Meanwhile, in Nigeria, MTN is yet to get an approval. In a statement made to dispel media reports that said MTN secured a new licence, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) said: “While MTN Nigeria has applied for the renewal of the Unified Access Service Licence (UASL) granted to it by the Commission, the application is yet to be approved as it is still undergoing required regulatory processes.”
