Mobile technology company, Mondia has announced the launch of its Pay-As-You-Go streaming service, Monsooq in Nigeria.
The entertainment service will offer a unique PAYGo model without a mandatory subscription, as users will be able to pay only for the time spent consuming their preferred content.
Nigeria becomes the second African country where Monsooq is now operational. This follows the platform’s November launch in South Africa with La Liga as a premium content partner.
Speaking on the launch, Mondia Group CEO Dr Amadeo Rahmann said:
Africa is the next frontier in regard to digitalisation. Our extensive footprint, increasing customer base and significant experience in the region make Africa a natural choice of focus for us.
“African markets, especially Nigeria with its large population and growth of digital streaming services, are primed for the democratisation of content,” he added.
Nigeria Is Africa’s Biggest Entertainment Market
Entertainment is a big deal to millions of Nigerians, with the success of reality TV shows like Big Brother Naija which aired on DStv and Showmax serving as substantial evidence.
Being Africa’s largest country with over 200 million people – almost four times the population of South Africa, Nigeria is the prime target for many streaming services looking to take over the African market.
Monsooq’s PAYGo model is definitely targeted at the average Nigerian subscriber who wants to only pay for the length of time spent while watching their favourite entertainment programs – ranging from sports and music to movies and TV series.
Together with the government, Nigerians have kept calling for the likes of Multichoice’s DStv to implement a PAYGo model, with the underlying notion that subscribers are being overcharged by the payTV’s fixed monthly subscription model.
Mondia will be looking to leverage this disposition among Nigerian viewers through the introduction of its Monsooq streaming service. According to the company, viewers will be able to purchase entertainment time to watch pre-paid content on the platform.
In December 2019, more Africans (526 million) accessed the internet than North Americans. However, Africa has a total internet penetration level of about 40%, 23.2% less than the rest of the world’s 63.2%.
New users on Monsooq will be given a 50% discount on content and 1-hour free access to the service during the launch. Thereafter, users will be charged N20 per hour. Payments can be made at anytime using debit or credit cards.

Like Netflix, Mondia is also working to promote local Nigerian content on its platform, citing the multi-billion dollar revenue-generating capacity of the country’s Nollywood industry.
The company says it will offer over 20,000 hours of entertainment including E-sport and EPIC ON and has partnered with leading regional content providers including Viva Nation and Wi-flix as well as prominent international TV channels, sports and games providers.
