Kazang, a prepaid value-added services (VAS) and card-acquiring business under Lesaka Technologies, has partnered with TymeBank to improve cash withdrawal accessibility in South Africa’s townships, rural areas, and underserved communities.
Through this collaboration, customers can now withdraw cash at more than 60,000 spaza shops and informal traders nationwide using Kazang Pay-enabled VAS terminals. This initiative significantly enhances financial inclusion in areas where traditional banking infrastructure remains limited.
“Among our 10 million customers, many still rely heavily on physical cash for everyday transactions. By partnering with Kazang, we are providing them with more convenient withdrawal points within their communities,” said Cheslyn Jacobs, Chief Commercial Officer at TymeBank.
Beyond withdrawals, these VAS terminals offer a suite of financial services, including prepaid electricity, airtime, data, gaming vouchers, bill payments, and remittances. This expansion transforms local traders into key financial service providers, bridging the gap between digital banking and cash-dependent consumers.
“Cash withdrawal services are critical in the informal market, where consumers can complete their daily shopping and transactions without the need to travel to an ATM or pay transport costs,” noted Malcolm Visagie, Business Manager at Kazang Pay. “This also allows customers to withdraw cash in smaller, more manageable amounts instead of making large, infrequent withdrawals.”
For merchants, integrating TymeBank withdrawals into their businesses presents an opportunity to increase foot traffic, enhance customer loyalty, and improve cash flow management. With digital wallet integration, traders can cycle cash more efficiently, reducing handling risks while keeping money circulating within their communities.
At its core, this partnership underscores the importance of financial inclusion by leveraging informal retail networks to extend critical banking services to those who need them most.
