The United Kingdom and the United States have inked what they tout as the first-ever bilateral agreement aimed at regulating the potential risks associated with artificial intelligence (AI) models.

The accord was formalized in Washington, with UK Technology Secretary Michelle Donelan and US Commerce Secretary leading the signing ceremony.

Donelan stressed the necessity of the agreement to effectively oversee the upcoming wave of AI models, which she described as potential “game-changers” with yet undiscovered capabilities.

Under the terms of the agreement, there will be a knowledge-sharing initiative between the UK’s recently established AI Safety Institute and its US counterpart, which is in its nascent stages.

The primary objective of the agreement is to address the risks posed by AI, including the establishment of mechanisms for independently assessing private AI models developed by entities such as AI organizations.

While the UK government has clarified that it has no immediate plans for broad AI regulation, the US has taken a more stringent approach. In contrast, the European Union (EU) is gearing up to implement the EU AI Act, which will impose regulatory guardrails on the development and utilization of AI models.
