Latin American fintech firm Tapi has acquired key assets from Mastercard-owned Arcus, including its utility payments, mobile top-up, gift card, and cash-in/cash-out operations, as part of its strategic expansion into the Mexican market.
The acquisition marks a significant step in Tapi’s regional growth strategy, enhancing its capabilities across core financial services and reinforcing its partnerships with banks, fintechs, merchants, and service providers in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, and Peru.
Tapi CEO Tomas Mindlin described the move as a pivotal milestone for the company. “Integrating Arcus’ cash and utility payment capabilities into the Tapi ecosystem represents a turning point in our journey,” Mindlin said, adding that the acquisition will help strengthen Tapi’s presence in Mexico—a market he previously identified as “very important for us.”
In 2023, Tapi raised $22 million in funding to support its expansion into Mexico, underscoring the country’s strategic importance in its long-term roadmap.
While Tapi will take over Arcus’ consumer-facing payment infrastructure, Mastercard will retain the Arcus brand and its institutional capabilities. The payments giant will continue to support processing, settlement, and reconciliation services through Mexico’s Interbank Electronic Payment System (SPEI), ensuring continuity for financial institutions and partners.
The deal positions Tapi to play a larger role in driving financial inclusion and digital payment innovation across Latin America, particularly in underbanked markets where alternative payment solutions are in high demand.
