Swiss Banks Collaborate to Pilot Regulated CHF Stablecoin

A consortium of six leading Swiss banks—UBS, PostFinance, Sygnum, Raiffeisen, Zürcher Kantonalbank, and Banque Cantonale Vaudoise—have joined forces to explore the development of a regulated Swiss franc (CHF) stablecoin.

The initiative is being executed in partnership with Swiss Stablecoin AG, with a pilot programme scheduled to run throughout 2026. The project will operate within a controlled sandbox environment designed to test real-world use cases while ensuring compliance and security.

According to participants, the pilot will focus on integrating blockchain-based applications with the Swiss franc, with the broader objective of strengthening Switzerland’s digital currency ecosystem and enhancing the global competitiveness of its financial sector.

At present, Switzerland does not have a widely adopted, regulated CHF-denominated stablecoin—creating a gap the consortium aims to address through this collaborative effort.

The sandbox will also be open to additional banks, corporates, and institutions interested in participating, signalling a push toward broader ecosystem involvement.

The Swiss initiative reflects a growing global trend of bank-led stablecoin development. Across Europe, financial institutions are increasingly exploring fiat-backed digital currencies to improve efficiency in areas such as cross-border and business-to-business (B2B) payments.

Notably, a group of European banks is working toward launching a euro-pegged stablecoin in the second half of 2026. In parallel, another consortium—including major global banks such as Bank of America, Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs, and UBS—has also initiated exploratory discussions around joint stablecoin issuance.

These developments underscore the increasing role of stablecoins as a potential foundation for next-generation financial infrastructure, particularly as institutions seek faster, more transparent, and programmable payment systems.
