PSA Payment Services Austria GmbH (PSA) is preparing to provide issuing support services for Wero to banks in Austria and Germany, laying the technical and operational groundwork for wider adoption of the European digital wallet.

The move will enable banks in both markets to connect more easily to Wero, the account-based mobile payment solution developed by the European Payments Initiative (EPI), with a view to extending access across the wider European market in the next phase.

Backed by 14 major European banks and two leading payment service acquirers, Wero is designed as a unified, secure and real-time payment solution that offers a sovereign European alternative to international payment providers.

“As a payment infrastructure partner, we see it as our responsibility to equip banks with future-ready infrastructure for innovative payment solutions and to actively support the development of a sovereign European payments ecosystem,” said Harald Flatscher, Co-CEO of PSA. “Our services will be available to all customers seeking to adopt Wero and will cover key implementation needs, from technical integration and regulatory compliance to ongoing operational support.”

Martina Weimert, CEO of EPI, welcomed the collaboration, noting that it would significantly expand Wero’s footprint. “We are pleased to see PSA enabling banks in Austria and Germany to offer Wero as a secure, real-time and innovative payment method,” she said. “This partnership is a concrete step towards scaling a sovereign European payment solution and increasing Wero’s reach across Europe for the benefit of consumers and merchants alike.”
