The National Bank of Kuwait (NBK) has issued a strong warning to individuals and businesses, urging them to verify identities before sharing sensitive information or engaging in transactions that involve personal or banking data. This advisory is part of NBK’s ongoing efforts to combat the rising tide of bank impersonation scams and other fraudulent schemes.

In support of the Central Bank of Kuwait’s (CBK) “Let’s Be Aware” campaign, launched in collaboration with local banks and the Kuwait Banking Association (KBA), NBK is actively promoting financial literacy and awareness across various customer sectors. The initiative aims to protect consumers from the increasing sophistication of fraud schemes, many of which now leverage artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced technology.

To reinforce this message, NBK is distributing educational content, including video clips, text messages, and tips through its social media platforms and other digital channels. This includes re-sharing CBK’s communications, all aimed at helping the public recognize fraud tactics and take appropriate precautions.

A key focus of NBK’s advisory is the growing prevalence of scams in which fraudsters impersonate bank employees. These scammers typically call victims from what appear to be local numbers, attempting to gain their trust and trick them into divulging banking information. NBK reiterates that it will never ask customers for personal information via phone calls, emphasizing that such requests are always fraudulent attempts to steal money or sensitive data.

The bank also provides detailed guidelines for customers to protect themselves from these scams. Among the tips are:

  • Always verify the identity of individuals or corporations before sharing sensitive information.
  • Be cautious when dealing with suspicious links.
  • Avoid saving sensitive information such as debit/credit card numbers on mobile devices.
  • Never write down PINs on cards or share them with others, including one-time passwords (OTPs).
  • Always log out of online or mobile banking platforms after completing transactions.

NBK employs its vast communication network, using popular digital channels to engage with customers and support the Central Bank’s broader goal of safeguarding the national economy. As one of Kuwait’s leading financial institutions, NBK remains a steadfast partner in the CBK’s initiatives to bolster financial and banking awareness.

NBK also plays a pivotal role in organizing activities to educate the public on a wide range of banking topics. In addition, the bank provides regular training for its employees to enhance their expertise in combating fraud and financial crimes.

The “Let’s Be Aware” campaign, spearheaded by the Central Bank of Kuwait, is the largest initiative of its kind in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region. The campaign addresses several critical issues, including fraud prevention, high-risk investments, maximizing the use of banking services, and promoting a culture of savings and investment.

NBK’s commitment to this campaign underscores its dedication to safeguarding customer interests and enhancing financial awareness throughout Kuwait.
