National Australia Bank (NAB) has strengthened its digital transformation journey by integrating Google Cloud into its multi-cloud ecosystem — joining Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure in a strategic move to boost operational resilience, scalability, and system reliability.
According to Steve Day, NAB’s Enterprise Technology Executive, the integration of Google Cloud has led to an 89% reduction in critical and high-severity outages, significantly improving service reliability for customers. He added that nearly 90% of NAB’s applications now operate in the cloud, a major leap from just 2% in 2018.
“The multi-cloud strategy allows us to run applications anywhere — increasing portability, scalability, and resilience across our systems,” Day explained.
NAB first partnered with AWS in 2013 and later added Microsoft Azure in 2020, extending that collaboration through 2031. The inclusion of Google Cloud now completes NAB’s vision of leveraging the capabilities of all three leading global providers to ensure seamless and secure digital banking operations.
This move places NAB among Australia’s most technologically advanced banks, keeping pace with industry peers such as Bendigo and Adelaide Bank, which migrated its digital banking systems to Google Cloud two years ago; Westpac, which is executing a five-year transformation project with AWS; and the Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA), which recently completed migrating its SAP core banking system to AWS.
In alignment with its modernization goals, NAB also announced an organizational restructuring, appointing Shane Conway as Group Executive of Transformation, effective December 1, 2025. Conway will lead the delivery of the bank’s ongoing technology modernization and simplification programs.
The adoption of Google Cloud represents a major milestone in NAB’s multi-cloud journey, underscoring the bank’s commitment to building a more agile, efficient, and customer-centric financial ecosystem — one designed to thrive in an increasingly digital and competitive global banking environment.
