Mobile ecosystem delivers over $800bn in global tax revenues – GSMA

Governments worldwide generated more than $800 billion in tax revenues from the mobile industry in 2025, underscoring the sector’s expanding role not only in digital connectivity but also in supporting public finances, according to a new report by the GSMA.

The findings, published in The Mobile Economy 2026, show that the global mobile ecosystem contributed approximately $810 billion in fiscal revenues last year—equivalent to about 3.5 per cent of total global tax income.

This contribution spans a broad mix of revenue streams, including employment taxes, corporate income taxes, spectrum fees, sales taxes, and social security payments linked to mobile operators and the wider digital value chain.

Employment-related taxes and social security contributions accounted for the largest share, generating an estimated $270 billion. The report highlights the sector’s growing importance as a stable and significant source of government revenue across both developed and emerging markets.

Globally, total tax revenues reached around $23 trillion in 2025, with high-income economies contributing the bulk at approximately $17 trillion, while low- and middle-income countries accounted for nearly $6 trillion.

Beyond direct fiscal contributions, the GSMA noted that mobile technologies are playing an increasingly critical role in strengthening tax systems. Digital payment platforms and mobile-enabled services are expanding financial inclusion, improving transparency, and enabling governments to better track economic activity.

Mobile-based tax solutions are also reducing compliance barriers by allowing individuals and small businesses to file and pay taxes electronically—an important development in emerging markets where informal economic activity remains high.

The report situates this fiscal impact within the broader economic significance of the mobile sector, which continues to expand alongside rapid adoption of technologies such as 5G, artificial intelligence, and the Internet of Things.

Looking ahead, the GSMA projects that mobile technologies will contribute $11.3 trillion to the global economy by 2030, representing 8.4 per cent of global GDP. The sector is expected to grow at a compound annual rate of 8.4 per cent between 2026 and 2030, significantly outpacing overall global economic growth.

In addition to its economic and fiscal impact, the mobile ecosystem supported approximately 50 million jobs worldwide in 2025. Of these, about 31 million were directly employed by mobile operators, with a further 19 million jobs created across related industries.

Industry analysts say the findings reinforce the central role of mobile connectivity in driving economic development, particularly in emerging markets where it serves as a gateway to financial services, education, healthcare, and government platforms.

The GSMA emphasised that sustained investment in mobile infrastructure, alongside enabling regulatory frameworks, will be critical to maintaining growth momentum, fostering innovation, and ensuring inclusive digital transformation globally.
