GCash Unveils Three New Cashless Payment Options for MRT-3 Commute

GCash, in collaboration with the Philippine Department of Transportation, has introduced a fully cashless automated fare collection system for the MRT-3 railway line, offering commuters faster and more convenient payment options.

The new system enables passengers to pay for rides directly through their GCash wallets and gain access to dedicated fast lanes across MRT-3 stations. Commuters now have three payment methods to choose from:

  1. Tap to Pay: This feature allows users with NFC-enabled Android smartphones to simply tap their device on the turnstile for entry and exit after a one-time setup within the GCash app.

  2. Commute QR: Users can generate a QR code in the GCash app, which can be scanned at both entry and exit points. The QR feature is designed to work even without mobile data for Globe and TM subscribers, ensuring reliable access on the go.

  3. GCash Visa Card: For those preferring a physical option, commuters can use the GCash Visa Card, linked to their GCash wallet, to tap and pay at station gates. This option is currently in its soft launch phase, with fare adjustments credited to users’ wallets within 24 hours post-trip.

To access the system, commuters must maintain a minimum balance of PHP 28—the maximum fare—in their GCash wallets. The fare is provisionally deducted upon entry, with the correct fare automatically refunded to the wallet upon exit. All transactions are viewable within the app’s transaction history for transparency and user control.

GCash’s mobile wallet services are managed by G-Xchange, Inc. (GXI), a subsidiary regulated by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), ensuring secure and compliant operations.

The initiative marks a significant step in advancing digital payment adoption in public transportation, promoting convenience, efficiency, and financial inclusion for everyday commuters.
