The European Payments Initiative (EPI) has welcomed five additional Belgian banks—Argenta, Bank Van Breda, Beobank, Crelan, and vdk bank—into its growing network, further accelerating the adoption of Wero, EPI’s unified instant payment solution across Europe.
These institutions are set to integrate Wero into their mobile banking apps or offer it as a standalone application for peer-to-peer (P2P) payments, enhancing digital payment accessibility across Belgium.
Koen Spinoy, Executive Committee Member at Beobank, emphasized the strategic alignment of the move with the bank’s digital priorities:
“In line with our strong digital journey, mobile app usage at Beobank has surged over 300% in five years. Adding Wero is a natural progression in our evolution—offering secure, innovative, and user-friendly payment services that reflect our customers’ day-to-day needs.”
Launched in Summer 2024, Wero currently supports P2P payments in Belgium, France, and Germany, and has already surpassed 40 million registered users. Looking ahead, the platform plans to introduce e-commerce functionality later in 2025, followed by support for in-store payments, subscription management, and loyalty services starting in 2026.
The inclusion of these Belgian banks follows closely on the heels of five Luxembourg banks and digital banking giant Revolut joining the initiative, demonstrating growing momentum for Wero’s adoption across Europe.
Martina Weimert, CEO of the EPI Company, expressed optimism about the platform’s expanding footprint:
“I’m especially proud to see our membership base growing steadily. The deep local presence and customer-centric focus of these new banks will be instrumental in making Wero a trusted and widely used payment solution throughout Europe.”
The continued expansion of EPI reflects a concerted effort to unify Europe’s fragmented digital payments landscapeand reduce reliance on non-European providers by offering a sovereign, continent-wide alternative.
