BBVA Enters German Market with Fully Digital Banking Platform

Spanish banking giant BBVA has officially launched a fully digital bank in Germany, offering customers a seamless app-based experience that blends fee-free banking with competitive financial products.

This move marks BBVA’s second foray into the European digital-only banking space, following a successful launch in Italy in 2021, where the lender has since onboarded over 700,000 customers.

The German rollout features an interest-bearing current account offering 3% annual interest for the first 12 months, alongside a debit card with 3% cashback on purchases—both benefits disbursed monthly, with no fees or charges.

“We’re bringing something new to Germany—a banking experience that combines the simplicity and convenience of a fee-free digital account with the full product range, reliability, and trust of a universal bank,” said Onur Genç, CEO of BBVA.

Enhanced Digital Features

The offering includes:

  • German IBAN checking account
  • Data-free debit card with a dynamic CVV for enhanced security
  • Access to over 70,000 ATMs and cash withdrawal points across Germany
  • Instant SEPA transfers and direct debit capabilities
  • A fully digital account switching service

BBVA’s app—touted as “Europe’s best digital banking experience”—is at the core of the service, reflecting the bank’s longstanding commitment to technology-driven innovation.

Flexible Lending Options

Customers can also access tailored financing solutions, including:

  • Pay&Plan, a tool to split debit card payments (up to 90 days post-purchase) into 3–12 monthly instalments
  • One-click personal loans
  • The Dispokredit overdraft facility

By merging digital-first simplicity with the breadth of services typical of traditional banks, BBVA aims to disrupt the German banking landscape and capture a growing segment of digitally savvy users.
