Ecobank Ghana PLC has officially announced the retirement of Daniel Sackey from his role as Managing Director, effective as of August 14, 2023, upon reaching the mandatory retirement age. Consequently, Mr. Sackey has relinquished his position as a member of the Bank’s Board of Directors.

Mr. Sackey’s journey with the bank dates back to 1995 when he joined its ranks. Over the years, he climbed the corporate ladder, taking on key roles such as Country Risk Manager, Regional Risk Manager, and Deputy Group Risk Manager. His career within the Ecobank Group also included serving as the Managing Director of Ecobank Rwanda and Ecobank Zimbabwe.

Furthermore, Mr. Sackey held the prestigious role of Cluster Head for the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) zone, overseeing operations in Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. In September 2016, he returned to Ghana, bringing with him a wealth of banking experience from East and Southern Africa, to assume leadership as the Managing Director of Ecobank Ghana.

During his seven-year tenure, Mr. Sackey is celebrated for spearheading the transformation of Ecobank Ghana into a leading player within the digital ecosystem. He is also commended for adeptly guiding the bank through the challenging times of the pandemic era, ensuring minimal disruptions to its operations.

Under his visionary leadership, Ecobank Ghana received numerous accolades, both nationally and internationally, in recognition of its outstanding performance. Mr. Sackey concludes his tenure on a high note, with the most recent honor bestowed upon Ecobank Ghana PLC as the “CIMG Best Bank of the Year for 2022.” The bank extends its best wishes to him in his future endeavors.

In the wake of Mr. Sackey’s retirement, Joana Mensah has been appointed as the Acting Managing Director, effective from August 15, 2023. Ms. Mensah’s association with Ecobank Ghana dates back to August 1993 when she joined as a Financial Analyst in the Corporate Banking Department.

Her career at the bank has been marked by significant contributions, including roles as a Relationship Manager overseeing the SME Portfolio, and later, her appointment as the Head of Commercial Banking in 1999.

In 2005, Ms. Mensah took on the role of Country Risk Manager, simultaneously serving as the Regional Risk Manager for the West African Monetary Zone, now recognized as the AWA Region.

Her extensive credit experience and astute judgment earned her the position of Senior Credit Officer at Ecobank Transnational Inc., responsible for approving large credit exposures and high-risk exposures within the AWA Region.

In May 2019, Ms. Mensah assumed the role of Country Chief Risk Officer at Ecobank Ghana, where she effectively managed the Enterprise-Wide Risk functions, including credit risk, market risk, operational risk, and ESG. Her responsibilities also extended to overseeing other risk areas through the Management Risk Committee.

Ms. Mensah brings a strong background in SME development, Corporate Banking/Strategy, and Risk Management to her new position. She holds an MBA in Finance and a BSc. in Agricultural Economics from the University of Ghana, Legon. She has previously served on the Boards of Ecobank Sierra Leone and Ecobank Ghana Venture Fund and is currently a member of the Board of Directors of Ecobank Gambia.
