China’s Didi Chuxing takes on Uber and Bolt in South Africa

Chinese ride-hailing company Didi Chuxing, has announced it will roll-out its service in Cape Town, South Africa, a move that will see it take on Uber and Bolt in the local taxi industry.

Didi, which is backed by SoftBank, was founded in 2012 and is already offering ride-hailing services in Japan, Australia, Russia and several South American markets.

In 2013, the company received strategic investments from Tencent and Alibaba respectively.

Didi South Africa is part of the world-leading transportation platform Didi Chuxing, which offers a full range of app-based transportation services to more than 600 million users across Asia, Latin America & Russia.

The platform is connecting over 550 million riders and tens of millions of drivers worldwide everyday.

On its website the company says, “Didi South Africa understands the challenges communities and the transportation industry face with the evolution of urban mobility (rideshare) and as a result is committed to creating the freedom and convenience to go places, open up horizons and give access to new experiences through our platforms.”

The ride-hailing company says its mission is to help South Africans move freely and to unlock their potential and that of the cities they live in.
