The African Development Bank (AfDB) and Google have formalized a collaboration with the goal of advancing digital transformation across Africa. This strategic partnership was solidified through the signing of a Letter of Intent during the Global Africa Business Initiative held at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The agreement signifies a mutual dedication to harnessing emerging technologies, enhancing and expanding digital infrastructure, and nurturing talent and skills development on the continent.

Both the African Development Bank and Google have a track record of fostering digital evolution in Africa. Over the past decade, the AfDB has invested a substantial $1.9 billion in projects that prioritize the development of broadband infrastructure, the establishment of favorable policy and regulatory frameworks, the cultivation of digital skills, and the support of innovative technology startups.

Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina, President of the African Development Bank, commented, “Our remarkable journey from a mere 2% telephony penetration in 1998 to the current era of 4G, 5G, and AI reflects tremendous progress. With 70% of sub-Saharan Africans aged under 30, our primary focus is on catalyzing businesses to create job opportunities and offer innovative solutions.”

Google has been a longstanding partner in driving Africa’s economic growth and digital transformation. In 2005, Google made a significant investment in a key submarine telecommunications cable, the Seacom cable, marking its commitment to digital transformation. Since then, Google has consistently supported talent development, innovation, infrastructure development, and regulatory advancements across the continent.

Through their collaboration with the African Development Bank, Google will provide technical assistance to empower entrepreneurs and small and medium-sized enterprises in digitizing their operations, securing financing, mastering digital marketing, and advancing private sector growth.

Dr. James Manyika, Google’s Senior Vice President of Research, Technology & Society, expressed, “With advanced technologies like AI, the most profound transformation is yet to come. Collaboration will be essential if Africa is to seize this opportunity, ensuring inclusivity and progress for all. We are excited to partner with the African Development Bank to work towards this shared commitment.”
