A recent report highlights that 75% of workers in Nigeria and Ghana are ready to integrate Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) into their professional lives.
The study, titled ‘How Work Preferences Are Shifting in the Age of GenAI,’ was published by Boston Consulting Group, The Network, The Stepstone Group, and The African Talent Company. It revealed that workers in these countries are not only willing to adopt GenAI but are also prepared to undergo retraining to advance their careers in response to technological changes.
The 2024 edition of the ‘Decoding Global Talent’ series surveyed 150,000 workers across 188 countries. According to the report, 75% of Nigerian and Ghanaian workers are eager to embrace retraining to stay competitive in their fields, compared to just 23% who would pursue retraining only if absolutely necessary.
Adwoa Banful, Principal at BCG Johannesburg, noted that there is a notable shift in employee attitudes towards AI, emphasizing that reskilling is seen as crucial for long-term career sustainability.
The report also highlighted that workers in Nigeria and Ghana feel confident in their negotiating positions. Specifically, 74% of Nigerian workers and 73% of Ghanaian workers believe they have the upper hand during job negotiations, surpassing the global average of 64%.
Additionally, the study found that workers in Nigeria and Ghana have distinct expectations from the recruitment process. Globally, 54% of workers might decline an attractive job offer after a negative interview experience. In contrast, only 35% of Ghanaians and 30% of Nigerians would reject such an offer under similar circumstances.
However, the report emphasized that certain factors remain crucial for job acceptance. Family-friendly benefits, a company’s societal impact, and workplace diversity are significant considerations. Notably, 64% of Ghanaians and 53% of Nigerians indicated they would not work for companies whose products or services negatively impact society.
Sebastian Dettmers, CEO of The Stepstone Group, commented on the transformative potential of AI in recruitment, stating, “AI presents a unique opportunity to revolutionize recruitment with innovative, technology-driven processes. This evolution will streamline operations, eliminate redundant tasks, and significantly assist individuals in finding the right job.”
