Nigeria is poised to welcome delegates from 54 African nations and other continental stakeholders in Internet governance to the 2023 Africa Internet Governance Forum (AfIGF 2023) in Abuja.

This year’s event, marking the 12th edition of this annual forum, is being graciously hosted by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) on behalf of the federal government. It is scheduled to be held at the prestigious Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja under the theme, ‘Transforming Africa’s Digital Landscape: Empowering Inclusion, Security, and Innovation.”

The AfIGF serves as a vital platform for fostering meaningful dialogues and collaborations on Internet Governance across various sectors and regional initiatives. Its primary objective is to advance digital connectivity, tackle Internet Governance challenges, and bolster Africa’s progress through digital transformation.

Mr. Reuben Muoka, the Director of Public Affairs at NCC, announced in a statement that the event will be preceded by the African Youth Internet Governance Forum, scheduled to run from September 13th to 18th, 2023.

The series of events in this year’s program will kick off with the Parliamentarian Symposium, taking place from September 18th to 19th, 2023. During this symposium, members of parliament from participating countries will engage in consultative sessions and networking opportunities. This roundtable discussion aims to enhance their understanding of the legislature’s roles in Internet Governance, fostering deeper collaboration with parliaments regarding Internet Governance in Africa.

Muoka emphasized the significance of the AfIGF 2023, stating, “As a pivotal gathering of stakeholders and investors in Africa’s digital future, the AfIGF 2023 promises to be a rare convergence of key stakeholders from government, civil society, academia, the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector, and a diverse range of private sector actors, all intentionally brought together to deliberate on crucial matters related to the development, accessibility, and governance of the Internet in Africa.”
