Hopeson Adorye joins World Taxpayers Association board

Ghanaian public advocate and international governance campaigner Hopeson Yaovi Adorye has been elected to the Board of Directors of the World Taxpayers Association (WTA), expanding his international leadership engagements in the areas of taxpayer rights and fiscal governance.

Adorye was elected during the association’s conference in Kraków, Poland, on Monday, October 5, 2026. His appointment is expected to provide a platform for Ghanaian and broader African perspectives to contribute to international discussions on responsible taxation, transparency, accountability and the prudent management of public resources.

Adorye pledges to strengthen taxpayer voice

Reacting to his election, Adorye expressed appreciation to the WTA leadership and members for the confidence placed in him.

“I am deeply honoured by this confidence and conscious of the responsibility that comes with it. Taxpayers are at the heart of every economy, and they deserve fairness, transparency, accountability and value for the taxes they pay,” he said.

“I look forward to working with colleagues from across the world to strengthen the voice of taxpayers and promote responsible fiscal governance.”

His comments position taxpayer rights, accountability and responsible management of public finances at the centre of his expected contribution to the association.

Taxation as part of the social contract

Adorye said taxation should not be viewed solely as a mechanism for generating government revenue, but also as an important component of the social contract between citizens and the state.

He argued that governments have a responsibility to ensure taxes are collected fairly and that public resources are used efficiently to deliver essential services, including infrastructure, healthcare, education and security.

The approach places greater emphasis on the relationship between tax collection and public value, with effective fiscal governance requiring governments to demonstrate accountability in how taxpayer funds are managed.

African perspectives in global tax discussions

Adorye’s election also creates an opportunity for African experiences to feature more prominently in international conversations on taxation, public expenditure and economic development.

For African economies, discussions around taxpayer education, revenue mobilisation, public accountability and the efficient use of government resources remain closely linked to broader efforts to strengthen fiscal governance.

His new position could therefore provide a platform for regional perspectives on the challenges and opportunities facing taxpayers and governments across the continent.

International governance experience

Adorye, who is Executive Director of Taxpayers League Ghana, brings previous international leadership experience to the WTA board. He has served as Global Board Chairman of the International Youth Network for UN Security Council Resolution 2250, an organisation associated with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

In his new role, Adorye is expected to contribute to initiatives focused on fiscal accountability, taxpayer education, good governance and greater citizen participation in public financial management.

His election adds an African voice to the WTA’s international platform and places taxpayer rights and responsible fiscal governance at the centre of his latest leadership role.
