As digital assets continue to gain traction across the payments landscape, Nacha’s Payments Innovation Alliance has launched a new initiative to examine their potential role in the future of money movement.
The Next-Gen Currency Project Team, led by Nacha and the Digital Sovereignty Alliance, will examine the global use of digital assets, with a particular focus on stablecoins and tokenized deposits, and their implications for payments.
The initiative comes as stablecoins and tokenized deposits attract growing interest across the financial and payments industries. While adoption is increasing, questions remain around how these digital assets could interact with existing payment systems, regulatory frameworks and financial infrastructure.
Jane Larimer, President and CEO of Nacha, said the project team would help the industry better understand the opportunities and challenges associated with the emerging forms of digital money.
“While digital assets like stablecoins and tokenized deposits are gaining popularity and acceptance, there are also many questions. That’s one of the things making this project team so critical,” Larimer said.
She added that the team would examine the potential implications of digital assets across different types of payments while monitoring developments in the regulatory environment.
Focus on education and industry understanding
Beyond assessing the potential impact of digital assets on payment systems, the project team will also focus on developing educational resources for industry participants.
Molly Woodman, Senior Policy Advisor at the Digital Sovereignty Alliance and Project Team Co-Leader, said the initiative would help close the knowledge gap between emerging digital asset models and traditional payment methods.
“Digital assets are still new, and the more educational resources available to the payments industry, the better,” Woodman said.
According to Woodman, creating educational resources will be a key objective of the project team as it seeks to improve understanding of digital assets and their relationship with established payment systems.
Payments industry stakeholders invited to participate
Nacha’s Payments Innovation Alliance brings together stakeholders from across the global payments ecosystem to collaborate on emerging payment trends, develop solutions and advance the future of payments.
The organisation said all participating members of the Payments Innovation Alliance are welcome to join the Next-Gen Currency Project Team.
The initiative is expected to provide participating members with an opportunity to contribute to discussions around stablecoins, tokenized deposits, regulatory developments and the broader evolution of digital payments.
