Digital payments company OPay has dismissed a viral notice claiming that it would suspend operations from September 1, 2026, describing the document as fraudulent and urging customers to disregard it.
The clarification followed the circulation of a document titled “Official Note” on social media, which advised customers to urgently withdraw funds ahead of an alleged indefinite suspension of the company’s services.
The notice falsely claimed that OPay would stop processing transactions and account-related services until further notice, triggering concerns among customers.
Head of Corporate Communications at OPay, Folayemi Joshua, described the notice as completely false and assured customers that the company remains fully operational.
According to Joshua, OPay has no plans to suspend its services, while customer funds remain safe and accessible.
He said the document was created by individuals seeking to mislead the public and cause unnecessary panic.
OPay highlights signs of fraudulent notice
OPay also pointed to several inconsistencies in the circulating document as evidence that it did not originate from the company.
The fintech said the notice featured an outdated logo, used an incorrect spelling of the brand name and adopted a design that was inconsistent with its official communication templates.
The company urged customers and members of the public to verify information through its official communication channels before acting on messages circulating on social media.
OPay reaffirmed its commitment to providing digital payment and financial services to customers across Nigeria, stressing that there has been no decision to halt its operations.
An OPay employee, who spoke anonymously because he was not authorised to comment publicly, also dismissed the shutdown report.
The employee described the claim as false and said the company had no plans to close its operations.
He further pointed to the incorrect logo featured on the viral flyer, saying the design differed from OPay’s official branding.
Fake shutdown claims raise customer protection concerns
The incident highlights the growing risks faced by digital financial service providers as false information can quickly spread across social media and trigger unnecessary concerns among customers.
For fintech companies, such claims can have implications beyond reputational damage, particularly when customers are encouraged to withdraw funds or alter their account behaviour based on unverified information.
OPay’s response therefore reinforces the importance of clear corporate communication and customer awareness in protecting users from potentially fraudulent or misleading information.
Customers have been advised to rely on verified company channels when seeking information about service availability, account operations or changes to financial products.
The company’s clarification also comes amid the broader expansion of Nigeria’s digital payments ecosystem, where maintaining public confidence and protecting customers from fraud and misinformation remain critical to the sustainable growth of fintech services.
For customers who encountered the viral notice, the company’s position is clear: OPay remains operational, and the purported September 1 shutdown is not an official company announcement.
