New Ghana Card fees take effect February 2, NIA announces

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has released a revised schedule of fees for Ghana Card registration and related services, following parliamentary approval of an upward review of its charges.

In a statement issued on Monday, January 26, 2026, the NIA said the new fees will take effect from Monday, February 2, 2026, and apply to services offered at district offices, premium centres, and under the Foreigner Identification Management System (FIMS).

According to the Authority, the fee adjustments were necessitated by persistently high operational costs associated with running the National Identification System. These include technology licensing, cybersecurity services, utilities, logistics, and personnel expenses, which the NIA said “remain elevated and are largely non-reversible.”

Under the new structure, first-time registration for Ghanaians aged 25 years and above at NIA district offices will now cost GH¢30, while registration remains free for applicants below 25 years. Card replacement and record updates that require a new card will each attract a fee of GH¢200.

Card renewal at district offices will cost GH¢150, while nationality updates will also be charged at GH¢200. Simple record updates that do not require card replacement will remain free.

For foreigners, first-time registration under the FIMS will cost the cedi equivalent of US$120. Annual card renewal and replacement will each cost the equivalent of US$78, while multiple-year renewals (minimum of two years) will be charged at US$75 per year.

The NIA also published fees for its premium registration services, which offer expedited processing. First-time registration at a premium centre will cost GH¢410, while card replacement will attract a fee of GH¢520. Record updates with card replacement, nationality updates, and card renewals at premium centres will each cost GH¢410, while record updates without card replacement will cost GH¢165.

The Authority urged the public to take note of the new fees and rely only on officially approved charges when accessing its services, adding that the revised pricing is aimed at sustaining the integrity, security, and long-term efficiency of Ghana’s national identification system.
