Nigeria’s ICT Sector Posts Strong GDP Growth in Q1 2025 – NBS

Nigeria’s Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector recorded significant growth in the first quarter of 2025, contributing 10.29% to the country’s total nominal Gross Domestic Product (GDP), according to the latest data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

This marks an improvement over the 9.25% contribution recorded in the same period of 2024 and a notable rise from the 8.55% reported in the previous quarter.

In real terms, the sector grew by 7.40% year-on-year in Q1 2025—up 3.36 percentage points from the corresponding period in 2024. However, on a quarter-on-quarter basis, the sector recorded a real growth rate of -8.86%.

Despite the quarter-on-quarter decline, the sector’s contribution to total real GDP reached 10.59%—surpassing the 10.17% posted in Q1 2024 and the 9.32% recorded in Q4 2024.

The ICT sector, as defined by the NBS, comprises key sub-sectors including telecommunications and information services, publishing, motion picture, sound recording and music production, and broadcasting.

In nominal terms, the sector’s year-on-year growth surged to 31.63% in Q1 2025—representing a 28.23 percentage point jump from the 3.40% recorded in Q1 2024, and 13.67 percentage points higher than the preceding quarter’s growth rate. The quarter-on-quarter growth for nominal GDP stood at 8.35%.

GDP, which measures the monetary value of goods and services produced in the country, was calculated based on a revised base year of 2019. Nigeria’s total GDP stood at N372.8 trillion in 2024.

This latest performance underscores the growing role of the ICT sector in driving economic growth and digital transformation across Nigeria.
