FCA Launches ‘Supercharged Sandbox’ to Accelerate Safe AI Experimentation in Financial Services

The UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has unveiled a new initiative dubbed the “Supercharged Sandbox”, designed to help financial firms experiment with artificial intelligence (AI) in a secure and supportive regulatory environment.

Through a strategic collaboration with Nvidia, firms participating in the sandbox will gain access to the tech giant’s full-stack accelerated computing platform, enabling them to test AI models with enhanced data sets, technical support, and regulatory guidance.

According to Jessica Rusu, Chief Data, Information and Intelligence Officer at the FCA, the initiative is aimed at bridging capability gaps for firms still in the early stages of AI exploration.

“This collaboration will help those that want to test AI ideas but who lack the capabilities to do so,” Rusu said. “We’ll help firms harness AI to benefit our markets and consumers, while supporting economic growth.”

The Supercharged Sandbox builds on the FCA’s broader efforts to foster responsible innovation. It follows the regulator’s AI Live Testing service, launched just last month, which supports more advanced AI applications ready for real-world deployment.

The announcement comes amid ongoing dialogue between UK regulators and the financial services sector over the balance between innovation and compliance. In a recent industry roundtable hosted by the FCA, banking leaders expressed concern that regulatory burdens, particularly around data protection and Consumer Duty obligations, are acting as barriers to AI investment and adoption.

These concerns were also reflected in a joint FCA–Bank of England survey, which found that regulatory clarity remains a top constraint for financial institutions deploying AI at scale.

By providing a structured environment for experimentation and collaboration, the FCA hopes the Supercharged Sandbox will address these challenges and help shape AI integration that is secure, ethical, and market-enhancing.
