The Federal Government of Nigeria is working toward the passage of the Digital Economy Bill by the second quarter of 2025, marking a significant step in its mission to enhance the nation’s digital infrastructure and drive economic development.
The bill, currently under review, aims to provide a robust legislative framework to support Nigeria’s digital transformation efforts, including advancements in technology innovation, e-governance, and digital services.
Pivotal Legislation for Digital Growth
Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, highlighted the importance of the bill during a recent interview on Arise TV, emphasizing its role in achieving Nigeria’s digital economy objectives. He stated that the legislation would address critical challenges such as infrastructure gaps, talent development, and regulatory transparency, ensuring the country’s digital sector thrives.
The bill’s provisions include creating a legal framework to support the burgeoning digital economy, a critical component of Nigeria’s goal to become a $1 trillion economy by 2030. Additionally, it seeks to enhance e-governance by fostering greater citizen engagement through public feedback from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
Nationwide Feedback Initiative
“This is the first bill in Nigeria’s history to engage every state and the FCT to gather feedback from citizens. We aim to complete our review process by February, after which the bill will move to the National Assembly for further consideration. Our goal is to see it passed by Q2,” Minister Tijani explained, urging citizens to stay informed and participate in the process.
Collaborative Efforts for Inclusivity
The bill has garnered support from key stakeholders in the National Assembly, including Senator Shuaib Salisu, Chair of the Senate Committee on ICT & Cybersecurity, and Adedeji Olajide, Chair of the House Committee on ICT & Cybersecurity. Their collaboration with the Ministry has ensured the legislation aligns with national priorities and addresses the needs of diverse stakeholders.
The Digital Economy Bill represents a critical milestone in Nigeria’s journey to becoming a global leader in the digital age, promising to unlock opportunities for innovation, economic growth, and citizen participation.
