Senegal is preparing to join the very closed circle of African countries to deploy 5G. The country, which has always distinguished itself by its avant-gardism in innovation, is willing to switch to ultra-broadband.

The commercial deployment of fifth-generation (5G) mobile technology in Senegal is expected to be effective during the year. On Friday, May 5 in Saly, on the occasion of the 6th forum for exchanges and sharing with the media, the Director General of the Telecommunications and Posts Regulatory Authority (ARTP), Abdou Karim Sall, announced the allocation of licenses to telecom operators by the end of July.

« By the end of July, we would have already completed the allocation process for license extensions […] We have already exchanged with all operators. We told them the need to equip Senegal with 5G,” he said.

In December 2021, Sonatel confirmed its ability to offer 5G in Senegal through a second test of the technology. Its rival Free has launched an experimental phase of ultra-broadband from June 2022 with the technical support of Ericsson. In addition, in July 2022, Senegal hosted Orange’s very first 5G laboratory (Orange 5G Lab) in Africa.

Thus, the advent of 5G in Senegal should make it possible to develop certain economic sectors, including online gaming, a revenue-generating activity stimulated by the growing availability of affordable mobile devices, improved Internet access and the birth of online gaming platforms.

In addition, Africa has great market potential for gaming. With the right strategies and marketing, businesses could make a lot of money from online gaming. According to a report by Mordor Intelligence, the gaming market in Africa is expected to show a compound annual growth rate of about 12% during the period 2021-2026.

It should be noted that Senegal is one of the pioneers in sub-Saharan Africa to officially have a legal, professional and promotion framework for eSports.
