Rwanda has embarked on a major digital transition in recent years. All sectors are being digitized, including healthcare.
The Rwanda Social Security Board (RSSB), the Rwandan social security institution, launched on Saturday, April 1, an innovative digital medical insurance system called RSSB KWIVUZA.
On Twitter, the institution said that the platform will, among other things, streamline medical operations, simplify payment processes. According to Regis Rugemanshuro, CEO of RSSB KWIVUZA, the system was extensively tested during the pilot phase, with positive feedback from the 30 health facilities that were integrated.
Currently, the system covers the services of the Mutuelle de santé, and it is planned to include, Rwandan Health Insurance (RAMA) and higher levels of health care such as district and provincial hospitals, private hospitals, clinics, polyclinics and pharmacies, by the end of the year.
It is also expected that RSSB will receive 96% of Mutual Health Mutual invoices electronically by May 2023, as all medical facilities will bill through the system. For health service providers, payment of medical bills will be made within a maximum of 15 days, up from 80 days, significantly improving their cash flow and liquidity.
It should be noted that this platform follows another launched at the beginning of February by the RSSB to allow members to have better visibility on their pension contributions. It is one of many innovations planned in the 2020-2025 BSSR Strategic Plan to transform the RSSB into a successful, data-driven organization by 2025.
