The UK government has launched a £49.2 million tender to integrate open banking technology into its Gov.UK Pay platform, enhancing digital payment options across public sector services.
Gov.UK Pay is widely used by central government agencies, local authorities, police forces, and NHS teams to process digital payments. Since its inception in 2016, the platform has facilitated over 94 million transactions across more than 1,000 public sector services.
Following a request-for-information issued last year, the Government Digital Service (GDS) has now published a market notice seeking a new payment service provider (PSP). The selected provider will be responsible for processing credit and debit card transactions as well as open banking (pay by bank) payments.
The contract is set for an initial 36-month term, beginning in July 2025, with an option for two 12-month extensions. The selected PSP will undergo a 12-month onboarding process before commencing full service delivery in 2026.
At present, Gov.UK Pay utilizes Stripe for local authorities, police forces, and government-owned charitable organizations, while Worldpay—via Government Banking’s PSP—handles payments for central government, arm’s length bodies, and NHS transactions.
This move signals the UK government’s commitment to modernizing digital payments, increasing efficiency, security, and accessibility through open banking technology.
