Greece is advancing its ambitions to become a Mediterranean technology and artificial intelligence (AI) powerhouse with the groundbreaking of a new data center by French company Data4. The development, located near Athens, is a key milestone in Greece’s efforts to enhance its digital infrastructure and establish itself as a hub for connectivity and innovation.
A Strategic Step Forward
The November 19 ceremony, attended by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and senior government and Data4 officials, marks the firm’s expansion into Greece. This investment is expected to drive significant economic benefits, create skilled job opportunities, and bolster Greece’s image on the global stage.
During the event, Mitsotakis emphasized the importance of projects like these in driving digital transformation and fostering innovation:
“The government is committed to supporting projects that drive digital transformation and foster innovation.”
Data4’s campus will initially feature two data centers, with the first expected to be operational by late 2026 or early 2027. The timeline for the second facility depends on market demand and growth in Greece’s digital ecosystem.
Enhancing Greece’s Digital Landscape
Data4’s investment aligns with the Greek government’s broader goals of transitioning to cloud technologies and enhancing digital services for citizens. Olivier Micheli, CEO of Data4, noted the strong support from the Greek government:
“The government [here] is very active, [it] has a program transition to the cloud and digital to facilitate the lives of the citizens.”
The first two data centers represent a €300 million investment, with a potential third bringing the total to €450–500 million, contingent on the project’s success and community collaboration.
Part of a Broader European Trend
Data4’s Greece initiative is part of a larger expansion strategy, with the company targeting a €7 billion investment across its European operations by 2030. Currently managing data centers in six European countries, Data4 is one of several major players driving the growth of digital infrastructure in the region.
Global tech giants are also investing in Europe. Microsoft has announced a $2 billion AI data center project in Spain and launched a similar initiative in Greece in 2020, which recently received ministerial approval.
Looking Ahead
With the foundation laid for its data centers, Greece is positioning itself as a key player in the Mediterranean’s tech ecosystem. These investments not only reinforce the country’s role as a regional technology hub but also signal its commitment to fostering innovation, digital transformation, and sustainable growth.
