The Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has announced plans to pursue the accounts of Ghanaians living abroad due to outstanding tax payments. The GRA conducted examinations on 70,000 accounts held by Ghanaians residing in 40 different countries, revealing a cumulative value of GH¢2.8 billion.
After a comprehensive two-month review, a tax liability of GH¢1.6 billion was identified on these accounts. The Commissioner-General clarified that this assessment does not signify the immediate collection of taxes on these accounts. The GRA’s efforts to scrutinize the financial activities of Ghanaians abroad are part of a broader initiative to enhance revenue collection and ensure tax compliance.
He further disclosed that additional data is anticipated in the first week of January 2024, which could lead to further improvements in the expected revenue inflows. The GRA remains committed to strengthening its tax enforcement measures to enhance the country’s fiscal position.
