In a significant stride towards enhancing communication services, Namibia is actively exploring the integration of satellite technology, as announced by the Minister of Information and Communication Technology (MICT), Dr Peya Mushelenga, on Friday.

During the annual staff meeting at the ministry, Mushelenga underscored the nation’s commitment to forging a digital future, recognizing the pivotal role of information and communication technology (ICT) in national development. He emphasized the government’s dedication to ensuring a digital future that benefits all citizens.

Mushelenga highlighted the transformative potential of information and communications technology, describing it as a tremendous opportunity to bring about significant and enduring positive change in the developing world. He pointed out the substantial improvements in the lives of both urban and rural populations, particularly due to the rapid penetration of mobile access.

Addressing the need for a competitive and fair ICT sector, the minister outlined Namibia’s initiatives to stimulate innovation and safeguard consumer interests. Proactive measures were discussed, including steps to address data costs.

“We are proactively transforming the 26 rural ICT centers nationwide, anticipating citizens to experience the results of these changes in this year of expectations,” he assured.

Mushelenga celebrated Namibia’s success in achieving digital inclusion, citing advancements in nationwide internet access, especially in underserved rural areas. The expansion of the national fiber-optic backbone contributed to faster and more reliable internet connectivity, effectively bridging the digital divide.

Looking forward to 2024, Mushelenga revealed that the country is finalizing the National Digital Strategy. Additionally, plans include presenting the Access to Information regulations and the Data Protection Bill in parliament. Consultations on the Cybercrime Bill are nearing conclusion, and the consolidated National ICT Policy will be finalized. The minister expressed optimism that these measures would further elevate Namibia’s standing in the digital landscape, ushering in positive changes for its citizens.
