Orange Sierra Leone has initiated a trial of its 5G service, available to both postpaid and prepaid mobile users. This trial aims to provide faster speeds, enhanced connectivity, and reduced latency. Initially, the 5G service will be accessible in the Freetown Central Business District. Orange plans to conduct various usage tests to expand 5G coverage, focusing on improving both fixed wireless access and mobile broadband speeds.
Orange’s move makes it the first operator in Sierra Leone to test 5G technology. Its competitor, Africell, is also gearing up to introduce high-speed broadband services after securing 5G spectrum rights in November 2022.
The full implementation of 5G technology is expected to meet the growing demand for high-speed connectivity, strengthening Orange Sierra Leone’s position in the local telecommunications market. Moreover, it will play a crucial role in advancing Sierra Leone government’s digital transformation initiatives. The capabilities of 5G will enable applications such as smart homes and buildings, smart cities, e-learning, e-government, telemedicine, virtual and augmented reality, streaming, artificial intelligence, and more.
