The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is set to host a series of investor clinics in Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt as part of the activities for World Investor Week 2024, taking place from October 7-11.

In a statement released during a press briefing in Abuja, SEC Director General Emomotimi Agama outlined the commission’s plans for the initiative, which aims to educate and engage both current and prospective investors across Nigeria. The clinics will be held at SEC’s zonal offices in Lagos and Port Harcourt, the SEC head office in Abuja, and during the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) Conference at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja.

“These clinics provide an important platform for investors to address issues related to their participation in the capital market while also educating potential investors about the current investment climate,” Agama explained.

The investor clinics will focus on resolving investment-related challenges, assisting participants with e-dividend mandates, and offering direct engagement with key capital market stakeholders such as stockbrokers, registrars, and fund managers. The initiative is designed to strengthen investor confidence and promote a better understanding of the capital market.

World Investor Week, an annual event organised by the International Organisation of Securities Commissions (IOSCO), is a global initiative aimed at promoting investor education and protection. This year’s theme, “Technology and Digital Finance, Crypto Assets, and Sustainable Finance,” highlights the growing impact of financial innovations on investment opportunities.

Speaking on the significance of the event, Agama said, “The week will provide investors with practical insights into important trends, including crypto assets and sustainable finance. It’s an opportunity for both seasoned and new investors to gain the knowledge they need to navigate the rapidly changing financial landscape.”

As part of the week’s activities, a financial literacy programme for students will be held at Pan-Atlantic University on Day 4, followed by a closing bell ceremony at the Nigerian Exchange to mark the end of the event.

Agama also encouraged investors to take advantage of the clinics to resolve any outstanding investment issues and seek guidance from investment advisers to make better-informed financial decisions.

“This week promises to be informative and empowering for all investors. We urge the public to participate in these events to enhance their understanding of the market and equip themselves with the tools necessary for sound investment decisions,” he added.
