MTN Nigeria has announced plans to construct the largest data centre in West Africa, featuring a 1,500-rack capacity and Tier 4 specifications within the country.

A Tier 4 data centre is designed to be completely fault-tolerant, with redundancy for every component, and an expected uptime of 99.995 percent. This ensures it can withstand a wide range of potential disruptions, offering the most reliable infrastructure.

Mr. Mohammed Rufai, MTN’s Chief Technical Officer, shared this development in Lagos over the weekend, highlighting that the construction of this data centre is a strategic move to enhance Nigeria’s digital infrastructure.

“The new data centre will bolster MTN’s infrastructure and serve as a critical resource for businesses across Nigeria,” Rufai stated. “Businesses that need data centre capacity can now eliminate the need for maintaining their own server rooms. Our facility will provide the necessary space and services, enabling companies to digitalise their operations and improve efficiency.”

Rufai added that the data centre would also improve the delivery of content from major tech companies like Meta and Google, bringing content closer to Nigerian users and enhancing access speeds.

He underscored MTN’s readiness to partner with startups and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), offering numerous opportunities for collaboration, particularly in cloud services.

Aligned with MTN’s Ambition 2025 strategy, Rufai noted that the data centre reflects the company’s commitment to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) goals. He pointed out that, in line with sustainability targets, MTN’s highly efficient systems will ensure that up to 60 percent of the power consumption of a typical data centre, which is used for cooling, is optimized for energy efficiency.
