Millions of Vipps and MobilePay users can now send person-to-person payments between Denmark, Norway, and Finland using only a phone number.

This new service allows Vipps users in Norway and MobilePay customers in Denmark and Finland to bypass IBAN numbers for cross-border money transfers. The cost for these transfers is four percent of the transaction amount for the sender, while receiving payments remains free. Banks may also impose additional fees.

Initially, the service covers P2P payments, but it will soon extend to enable payments to the 325,000 merchants and organizations using Vipps MobilePay across the three countries. Additionally, Sweden will join the program later this year.

The feature follows the 2021 merger of Danske Bank-owned MobilePay and Vipps, backed by a consortium of Norwegian lenders. This merger created a Nordic mobile payments powerhouse with over 11 million customers.

Rune Garborg, CEO of Vipps MobilePay, states: “Our users have long requested a simpler way to send money across the Nordics. Now, we have the solution ready. This means goodbye to long IBAN numbers and tedious processes. This is the first of many steps we are taking to bring the Nordics even closer together.”
