Elon Musk, along with his artificial intelligence (AI) startup xAI, has introduced “Grok,” a chatbot AI with claims of outperforming OpenAI’s original ChatGPT in various academic assessments.

The xAI team’s goal is to create AI tools that empower research and innovation, with a commitment to assisting humanity by providing advanced AI capabilities through Grok. They highlight a “unique and fundamental advantage” of Grok, emphasizing its real-time knowledge of the world via the X platform.

Musk and the xAI team have described Grok as a chatbot that can answer questions with a touch of wit and even a hint of rebellion. They advise users not to shy away from humor when engaging with Grok.

Grok is powered by the Grok-1 engine, which was put through several academic tests in the fields of mathematics and coding. In these assessments, Grok-1 outperformed ChatGPT-3.5, although it did not surpass OpenAI’s most advanced model, GPT-4, in any of the tests. Musk and xAI attributed this to the differences in the amount of training data and computational resources used.

Grok is currently available through X Premium Plus for $16 per month, but initially, access is limited to users in the United States. xAI noted that Grok is still in a “very early beta” stage and is expected to see rapid improvements in the coming weeks.

Furthermore, the xAI team has committed to implementing additional safety measures to prevent malicious usage of Grok, emphasizing their belief in AI’s potential to contribute to scientific and economic progress while working to ensure it remains a force for good.

The introduction of Grok follows Musk’s founding of xAI eight months ago and marks a step forward in the company’s journey to advance AI capabilities.
