M-PESA Kenya has expanded its mobile money services into Ethiopia, enabling seamless cross-border transactions between the two nations via M-PESA Global. This strategic initiative is designed to increase mobile money usage and penetration across Ethiopia, contributing to economic growth and opening up new opportunities for both individuals and businesses in the region.

Esther Waititu, Chief Financial Services Officer at Safaricom Kenya, emphasized the benefits of the expanded service, stating, “This collaboration aligns with our mission to deliver innovative financial solutions that meet the evolving needs of our customers. With this service, cross-border transfers and bill payments will become more accessible, efficient, and cost-effective.” Waititu added that the service will be particularly advantageous for customers sending money to Ethiopia, as well as businesses looking for a reliable and affordable transaction option.

Elsa Muzzolini, Chief Financial Services Officer at Safaricom Ethiopia, highlighted the partnership’s significance, especially with Ethiopia’s revised forex policies. “The extension of services with M-PESA Kenya comes at a pivotal moment, encouraging the diaspora and local business owners to adopt digital payments for remittances and operational funding. This collaboration will accelerate the adoption of digital payments across the region,” Muzzolini noted during the signing ceremony.

In addition to its expansion into Ethiopia, M-PESA supports money transfers in over 190 countries, cementing its position as a leading mobile money platform for both personal and corporate transactions on a global scale.
