The Kenyan executive has put in place several projects to accelerate digital transformation and make it a pillar of socio-economic development. One of the flagship projects is the deployment of several kilometers of optical fiber throughout the national territory.
The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) and the ICT Authority (ICTA) will deploy the last mile of fibre to 19 unserved or underserved counties across the country. An agreement to this effect was signed on Monday, April 17 between the two parties.
On Twitter, the said that this technical cooperation agreement (TCA) will allow it to support the deployment of fiber optics in the identified counties to the tune of 5 billion (about $ 37 million) through the Universal Service Fund (USF).
It should be noted that this project supports the government’s Digital Transformation Program (GoDTA) initiated by the President of the Republic of Kenya, William Ruto. During his election as head of state last September, the politician announced a set of digital projects, including the construction of a 100,000 km fiber optic network across the national territory within 5 years.
Ruto also promised to increase the rate of digitization of public services and automation of critical government processes to 80%. The goal is to make Kenya a benchmark for digital transformation on the continent by 2027. A transformation that will guarantee the country real human, economic and social development.
In this regard, the Director General of the CA, Mr. Ezra Chiloba (photo, right), said that the phenomenal project “will significantly transform the country in the coming years”.
