Burkina Faso, like many other African countries, is engaged in the digital transition process. The country aims to make digital technology an instrument for transforming society in order to accelerate socio-economic development.

The government of Burkina Faso has chosen Bridge Fiber Solutions (BFS) to operate and manage the country’s national telecommunications backbone. The company launched its commercial activities in Ouagadougou on Friday, March 10, 2023 in the presence of the Minister of Digital Transition, Post and Electronic Communications, Aminata Zerbo-Sabané.

Speaking on this new step towards an effective digital transition, Aminata Zerbo-Sabané said that “the government has made a significant investment by building this national backbone that makes it possible to mesh the entire territory in optical fiber to be able to make a broadband connection available to companies and public administration, in order to accelerate this digitalization“.

Thus, thanks to government approval, BFS becomes the only manager of Burkina Faso’s public backbone network. As part of this new mission, it will have to provide telecom companies and other entities with different services such as capacity rental; dark fiber rental; wavelength rental; sheath rental, as well as Internet access. He will also be able to invest in the modernization and extension of the network if necessary.

As a reminder, the national telecommunications backbone technology project was launched in 2016 by the government with the objective of developing national and international broadband connectivity by interconnecting the 45 provinces of Burkina Faso by a 3,000 km long optical fiber.

According to Boris Compaoré, the director of BFS, this business launch is the beginning of a long process that aims in the short term to reduce the digital divide and offer quality Internet access services at favorable conditions to various digital companies and the administration, at very competitive costs.
