The Rwanda Social Security Board launches a digital system to promote better medical insurance in the country

Rwanda has begun a large-scale digital transition in recent years. All sectors are being digitized, including health.

The Rwanda Social Security Board (RSSB), the Rwandan social security institution, launched on Saturday, April 1, 2023, an innovative digital medical insurance system called RSSB KWIVUZA.

On Twitter, the institution said that the platform will, among other things, streamline medical operations and simplify payment processes. According to Regis Rugemanshuro, CEO of RSSB KWIVUZA, the system was thoroughly tested during the pilot phase, with positive reactions from the 30 health facilities that were integrated.

Currently, the system covers the services of the Mutual Health Insurance, and it is planned to include, the Rwandan Health Insurance (RAMA) and higher levels of health care such as district and provincial hospitals, private hospitals, clinics, polyclinics and pharmacies, by the end of the year.

RSSB is also expected to receive 96% of the Mutual Health Insurance Bills electronically by May 2023, as all medical institutions will bill via the system. For health service providers, the payment of medical bills will be made within a maximum of 15 days, compared to 80 days before, which will significantly improve their cash flow and liquidity.

It should be noted that this platform follows another launch at the beginning of February by the RSSB to allow affiliates to have better visibility on their pension contributions. It is one of the many innovations planned in the 2020-2025 RSSB strategic plan to transform the BRSS into a high-performance and data-driven organization by 2025.
