Leading drone logistics company Zipline is set to enhance Nigeria’s healthcare supply chain by expanding its drone delivery services to five additional states. This expansion aims to improve the distribution of critical medical supplies—including vaccines, blood products, and essential medications—particularly in remote and underserved areas.
Having launched in Kaduna in 2022, Zipline has since extended operations to Bayelsa and Cross River. In Bayelsa alone, Zipline has significantly improved healthcare access by delivering over one million vaccine doses and more than 71,000 units of essential medicines. The company also partnered with Jumia in 2022 to facilitate the drone delivery of consumer goods across Nigeria.
Cutting-Edge Drone Technology for Efficient Medical Logistics
Zipline’s autonomous drones operate beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS), enabling them to cover vast distances and ensure timely deliveries. Each drone can carry up to 2 kg of cargo and has a 100 km service radius, allowing it to reach remote healthcare facilities efficiently.
One of the key challenges in medical logistics is maintaining the cold chain for temperature-sensitive vaccines. Zipline addresses this issue by employing insulated cold bags and a just-in-time delivery model to ensure that vaccines remain at optimal temperatures, minimizing spoilage and waste.

- In Rwanda, the use of drones for medical deliveries led to a 67% reduction in blood product expirations.
