Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Chief of the World Health Organization (WHO), has issued an urgent call for increased funding to combat the growing mpox outbreak in Africa. The WHO, in collaboration with the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), local governments, and other partners, is ramping up efforts to address the escalating crisis.
Dr. Tedros highlighted the severity of the situation on X, noting, “As a more lethal strain of mpox spreads across multiple African nations, @WHO, @AfricaCDC, local governments, and partners are intensifying their response to halt disease transmission. However, additional funding and comprehensive support are crucial for an effective response.”
Dr. Tedros also mentioned the possibility of convening an International Health Regulations Emergency Committee to assess whether the mpox outbreak should be declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).
